When a concrete floor is polished it is protected through two different processes.  The first, a densifier, is applied during the grinding stages.  This product actually hardens the concrete over time, which makes it easier to maintain the concrete floor.  The second is an impregnator which is applied after the concrete polishing process.  The impregnator is to concrete what scotch guard is to carpet.  It prevents chemicals, oils and other moisture from absorbing into the concrete.

A polished concrete floor, after the application of a densifier, is harder than most other flooring available.  This equates to a longer lasting, easier to maintain surface.  This is why most commercial buildings and factories are choosing to polish their concrete.
